West Coast - Karamea 10.-12. Golden Bay

The route from the Golden Bay to the west coast of the South Island through the Buller's Gorge. We had several people get the hint to go during the day when you can see as much of the area. The scenic route passes through beautiful countryside and there are several lookouts. The best with the view we have chosen for the lunch break. While it was pretty icy up there, but the sun has lit the landscape friendly. After a piece of birthday cake for dessert was `s next. A bit later came to meet us extra Markus birthday is a classic car parade. Since it was a surprise, we were unfortunately the camera is not ready immediately and could take photographs only one of the stragglers. By late afternoon we were finally on the west coast, along which we had to go north, to reach our goal of Karamea. At sunset, we have made a short stop at a palm tree and started there a photo session. To the subject maybe you remember from a previous entry.

expected in a chaotic Hostel Karamea us in hippie style with its own radio station, poorly ventilated kitchens and smoky lounge. We wonder, by the owner and in the small radio-Karamea cubbyhole out where we learn to our great relief that we are not directly accommodated in the hostel, but get your own "stream". This is a kind of very simple little cottage. Should we have in NZ just try it because many New Zealanders have somewhere a belonging to the lifestyle here. Ours is the yellow, the inside was furnished in style in 70s design. The furniture and carpets look the same again (as in good) and old. We round off Markus birthday with a bottle of expensive wine and a leisurely dinner.

The next day we decide on a mix of several shorter Walkways in Oparara Basin.

Limestone Arch
There are rock arches, caves, rock formations, one in the bush hidden lake and information boards about the eventful genesis of Walkways: A group of people who have created the way, decided to turn over their camp in the bush, as the daily drive had cost too much time. So they drew the attention of the Wekas up, which is made from now on, a fun fact to hide their tools to steal food or to play early morning wake up call.

Oparara Basin
Back at parking lot we are already waiting for a few Wekas, very curious birds, hoping to tap some food. One is so pungent that he almost joined with the car.

inquisitive Weka foraging
and even a bird
